A special note

This website raises two issues that must be forthrightly addressed. First, was Birkenau an extermination center? At first glance, there is absolutely no physical evidence whatsoever connecting the place with mass murder. The gas chambers and crematories no longer exist. They are rubble. Indeed, parts of Birkenau even look serene. Without knowing the history of Birkenau, one could easily mistake the place for an abandoned army base or a work camp. But history teaches what Birkenau was: a killing factory. That assertion is supported by a mountain of documentary evidence. Photographs, letters, and most importantly reliable first-hand eye witness accounts, including that of the commandant of the camp, attest to Birkenau’s nefarious purpose. Those who choose to deny the evidence do so for subjective reasons that bear no relationship to the facts.

Second, there are some who equate the systematic bombing of the German cities during World War Two with the Holocaust. Such a comparison is utterly disingenuous and without foundation. The German authorities were fighting a racist war, the goal being the physical extermination of entire populations. In stark contrast, the purpose of the aerial bombing of Germany by the Allies was not the eradication of the German people but to get the Germans to stop fighting. To wage war the German government mobilized the entire country. As a result, the entire country became a legitimate target for Allied military operations. The Allies recognized and even publicly debated the moral issues raised by the air offensive; the same cannot be said for the German regime as it related to its program of ethnic cleansing and mass murder. For the Germans, the only issue was how to make the process of extermination more quick and efficient. That scores of German cities were reduced to rubble and hundreds of thousands of Germans, most of whom were civilians, lost their lives is tragic. But blame lies entirely with the German authorities whose fanaticism made the air offensive necessary.
